Introduction
Azim Hashim Premji is an Indian business tycoon, investor, engineer and philanthropist, who is the Chairman of Wipro Limited. He is informally known as the Czar of India’s IT Industry. He guided the IT company Wipro over 40 year of diversification and growth to emerge as one of the global leaders in the software industry. In 2010, he was voted among the 20 most powerful men in the world asia Week. He has been listed twice among the 100 most influential people by the Time Magazine, in 2004 and 2011. In 2013, he agreed to give away at least half of his wealth by signing ‘The Giving Pledge’.
Early life and Education
Azim was born on 24th july, 1945 in Bombay in a Nizari Ismailia Shai Muslim family with origins in Kutch area of Gujrat. At that time, his father was setting up the company named Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd, based at Amalner, a small town in the Jalgaon district in Maharashtra. The company was manufacturing hydrogenated cooking oil under the brand name Sunflower Vanaspati and a laundry soap named 787. After completing school education in Maharastra, Azim graduated with a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Standford University, USA.
His career
Azim’s father died of a heart attack in 1966. At that time he was in the USA.
This forced him to return to India and carry on his father’s business at the age of 21. He completed his degree later on through distance mode. On recognising the importance of emerging IT field during the late 1970s, the company started manufracturing minicomputers in 1980. In 1984, Wipro’s Infotech division diversified into software. The Indian Government’s policy of Liberalisation in 1991 fouther helped Wipro to expend its exports by 50% every subsequent year. wipro curretly makes 65% of its sales to the USA.
Under his able leadership, a 7 crore Rupees company manufacturing cooking fats has intergated corporation in services, technology products and consumer products. He is a role model for young enterpreneurs across the world. He has integrated the country’s entreprenerial methodology with professional management, based on concretwe values and superlative integrity . His greatest streangth lies in bringing togther and building motivated team of high potential, high performance people. With his vision and pragmatism, Wipro Corporation has become the second most competative and sucessful company in India.
He was the prime mover behind Wipro’s Corporation, he said , “The end objective of our ‘customer-in’ concept is that we want to build the voices of the costomer into our products and services, I am very clear that as a world-class organisation, what Wipro needs to be concerd about is the process, not merely the resullt’s.
His Achievements
Azim Premji has been recognised by the Business week magazine as one of the greatest enterpreneurs for bieng responsible for Wipro emerging as one of world’s fastest growing companies. In the year 2000, he was conferred an homorary doctorote by the Manipal Academy of Highier Education. In 2005, the Government of India honoured him with the tittle of the Padma Bhushan for his outstanding work in trade and commerce. In 2006, he was awarded the Lakshya Business visionary by National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai.
His Awards and Honours
In 2009, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University in USA for his outstanding philanthropic work. In 2011, he has awarded the Padma vibhushan, the second highest civilian award by the Government of India. I(n 2015, Mysore University conferred an honorary doctorate on him. In April 2017, the India Today magzine ranked him 9th in Indian’s 50 most powerful people. In 2018,he was conferred with Chevalier de la Lwgion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) by the French Government.in 2019, he was cited by Forbes Magzine as one of the ‘Heros of philanthropy list of 30 altruist’s in the Asia-Pacific region.
Philanthropic Works
As he decided to concentrate on philanthropic in 2001, he established the non-profit organisation names ‘Azim Premji Founded’,through which he aimed to imoprove the quality of elementry education in rural regions throughtout India. By the end of 2010, the foundation had extended computer-aided education to more than 16000 schools, with child-friendly content increasingly available in local languages. In December 2010, he pleged to donate US Â $ 2billion. He has also founded the Azim Premji Foundation had extended conputer-aided education in India. This donation is the largest of its kind inh India. In March 2019, Premji Foundation collaborated with the National Centre for Biological sciences and the Institute foe Stem cell Science and Regenerative Madicine for augmenting testing infrastructure to deal with the corona pendamic.
